New Jersey high school athletes participating in post season events are tested for steroid use (since 2006) and Texas will begin testing all student
athletes beginning next year for steroid use. What do you think? Find evidence of other schools who are doing the same things or things
similar. Are there schools in SD who are testing students for drug use? Why is this a problem or is it?

I don't believe that schools should be testing students for drug use. I mean, it is a good thing to do (you don't want a football player who uses steroids on your team {though that would cause some serious damage}), but still. What right do they have to drug test athletes? If they start that here in SD, I will refuse to participate in sports (haha I don't do sports anyways).
It surprises me that it has actually come down to high school students NEEDING drug tests. I think that it is probably a good idea if its purpose is to prevent kids from taking drugs or catch the ones who are, but I feel like it is unfair. I think that it is pretty invasive, and I would feel really sorry for the people whose lives it would "destroy". I mean, for some kids sports, etc. are all they do, so for them to be caught taking drugs and have their favorite activity taken away could be devastating for them at this point in their life. I think that even though drugs are wrong, people make mistakes, and I like the idea of them being able to just get past that without being severely punished.

haha. I don't do sports so I don't have to worry about that ^_^
Well, I do not approve of drug testing of high school athletes. High School athletics have basically no influence on a student's future unless they go pro, so there is no point in drug testing unless they win state or some other title.
College and Pro athletes, however, should be drug tested. They are more important in that they actually have a national audience and title and stuff.
"haha. I don't do sports so I don't have to worry about that ^_^"
I wonder why.... =D
wow this is going kinda slowly...
i think that in high school sports noone really needs to use steriods because it doesnt really matter as long as you try harder. Other wise in the NFL there is probably alot of steriod use and that is what is holding alot of kids back from getting to the dream because other are cheating
I really think that every state should test athletes in sports for steriods. The reason why I think this is because kids are coming to school just jacked up. They sound like they are girls though.
I don't think we should have a drug test because it is not right. We are not in the NFL they do not need to be so serious about sports. But if they did (Aberdeen Roncalli should be the first because they take steriods proably Just kiding but it would not surprise me.) If someone is caught they should not get to play 5 game and do charity work.
I think athletes should be tested for steroid use because even in a small town like ours, athletes are using steroids to become "better" at a sport. If the athletes of our sports were to get tested for steroids, less people will be less likely to start using them. Steroids aren't good for you so I don't understand why big star athletes take them in the first place. If the coach didn't think they were good enough or strong enough, then they wouldn't have hired them to play for them. If an athlete loves sports, they shouldn't need to use drugs or steroids to help them get "better."
But why? That's violating our basic freedoms!!!
I dont think that our school should be testing student for drub use because its they problem if they are addicted to drugs not the schools, maybe their parents should step up and be parents and actually care about wat their child is doing. Yeh maybe if our school did do drug testing, students wouldnt be doing it. But if your that stupid to start something that is going to ruin you, then thats your our darn fault.
Ashley, i AGREEE with you 100% that it would be violating our basic freedoms!!!!!
Finally!! Someone agrees!
Thanks tons Sarah!
The High School Activities Association has rules and regulations about what happens to athletes who use illegal drugs or alcohol. Our school follows those rules and they are listed in your atheletic handbook. Read it and see what it says.
Ashley-- what basic freedoms does drug testing violate? Alcoholics, recovering addicts and paroled criminals undergo testing by the state and federal governments because the broke the law (the rules). What is different about this?
I don't think they need to drug test kids who are in sports because if they want to ruin their life than that is their choice to ruin it not ours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"Ashley-- what basic freedoms does drug testing violate?"
Violation of Privacy. If I feel like taking steroids to do better, that's my own problem. UGH. Now I'm just confused! Everyone knows that if you take steroids, you're not allowed to partake in sports, right? But what gives someone the right to drug test me for it? Steroids may be illegal, but that's not the school's business-it's me, my family, & the Police. The school has no right to get involved in my own personal affairs.
Not that I do steroids or anything =)
They can but it takes away certain privacies. I mean it is their right to check on people.
"That's violating our basic freedoms!!!" It may be violating peoples freedoms but the government say that drugs are illegal and if they choose do do we can't stop them. If people are taking steroids the other teams have unfair advantage. They need to check because of safety reasons. What do you have to be afraid of unless you are taking drugs? Sometimes it can save people from total destruction of their bodies. They can go to rehab and learn to get their act together otherwise they will go to jail/ or struggle the rest of their lives. Some of my relatives drank and used drugs. Several killed themselves, others went to rehab and became successful with jobs, and some died at early ages because of the crap that they pulled. In some ways it is good and can help the community. So for you Ashley yeah it can be good but sometimes it can hurt families. So whether or not you agree with the subject or not, it does make a difference in the lives of people. So I am both for it and against it. It also depends on how you look at it.
Who cares if it is violating you freedom! You are breaking the law if you are doing roids. If they thought it was a violation towards their freedom the shouldn't have done them and if they aren't what do they have to worrie about its not like they did them. So there is no violation!!!!!
"Who cares if it is violating you freedom!"
Well as an American citizen I would say that you should care.
"So for you Ashley yeah it can be good but sometimes it can hurt families. So whether or not you agree with the subject or not, it does make a difference in the lives of people. So I am both for it and against it. It also depends on how you look at it."
Uh? I'm just confused now...
Ashley I was just trying to say if you don't take the drugs you shouldn't care, you have nothing to worry about you have nothing to hide. If you do then yeah its a different story. The ones that should worry is the ones who take drugs. They decided to do it so if you don't want to get in that mess just don't do them. So really the only one that is violating thier freedom are the ones who are taking the drug in the first place that lead to the drug test. You shouldn't be pinning the law for this one. The one you should be pinning are the ones who DO THE DRUGS.
If you think it is invading our freedoms it makes me believe you are taking drugs and this is just your way of letting someone know. NOT SAYING YOU ARE. but the way you talk about it, it sounds like it!!! No offence.
If you're not out for sports then how is it "violating your freedoms?" Maybe its the fact that you're the one taking the drugs/steroids. And how is it even violating freedoms when you're the idiot who decided to take them in the first place? Some reason, to me, thats not violating any freedoms what so ever!!
But do students under the age of 18 and those who sign an agreement not to take illegal drugs or drink alcohol while involved in school acitivities (training rules agreement)have any right to privacy? Did any of you actually read the agreement you signed at the begining of the year? It would be interesting to see what the legal policies and codes say about the whole idea.
First off, since there seems to be some confusion on this, I do NOT do drugs. The only drugs I use is Tylenol when I get a headache, alright? Is that clear now? Jesus, use your brains on this people!!!
Kara, what if I went out for a sport and the only way I could do it was if I let them do a drug test on me? Would you do it? Why should I let someone have the privilege to go and do a random drug test on me, drug free and all?
And I went the extra mile and found this:
"Amendment IV
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized. "
Basically, they're saying that the gov't can't go and violate a person, their house or whatever without permission.
So fine. Take your drug test. I refuse to let anyone do it to me.
It shouldnt realy matter if they do take drug tests. Its not like we have anthing to hide. so whats the big deal with it. your going to quit spots casue of a drug test that is the stupidest thing i have heard. and we dont need steroids to make us stronger all we need is HEART!!
It shouldn't be a problem if you have nothing to hide. Personally, I'd find it more of a pain than anything. We live in a small town, if there are people doing that, I don't really know. I'm not hip on the gossip I guess. In bigger cities it would be more applicable to do that, but since it's Redfield...eh I would say we're safe. Plus, if someone is taking drugs I'm sure everyone and their dog knows about it. The coach would hear it, they're not dumb.
I would find it a bit of an inconvenience, but I wouldn't care - whatever they want I guess.
"...and we dont need steroids to make us stronger all we need is HEART!!"
That's the gayest thing I've heard all day Drew.
