blog. Should competitive sports be about competition and winning, about learning and developing new skills or about learning sportsmanship? What combination of these three concepts should exist in school sports? What about in other activities that encourage competition - like band contests, FFA and FCCLA contests and oral interp?

Competition is good. For some of us we love to compete and for others it may just be about having fun but you are still competing. In a way you are learning something, because in real life you compete also. You compete for jobs, scholarships, and for the juniors valid victorian. If you dont compete you fail in life. Its almost as if you dont care.
I think competition is a very good thing otherwise no one would ever try to do better at something. Sometimes in sports, I think competition gets a little out of hand though even with the coaches sometimes. In sports, I think what is even more than competition is working together, learning self discipline, and life skills that you can take further in life then just a winning season. Everyone loves to win and losing isn't much fun, but competition in sports gets taken way too far sometimes.
Competition is good because it keeps you sharp, but i also think at the same time you are born either to compete or not too. Some people have the will to win while others just settle with the bench. Kuehn is right because you will have to compete all of your life for jobs and such.
Competition is over-ratd. Sure you need it to survive in this dog-eat-dog world, but too much can destroy a person's moral.
Yes, I agree that competition is good, in small doses. If people are only worried about how they are doing compared to the best person on your team, than you will not get better. Compete with yourself, as Mr. Hansen always says to me at track meets. I think sportsmanship is the most important one of all that a student could learn in sports. I mean of course you will get better, but sportsmanship is a lifelong lesson that you can learn. Play a clean game, and if you lose, at least you competed with yourself.
Yes Jared is right, but you don't have to play a dirty fight to win the war.
In band contests, you are competing against your self same as oral interp, but i must agree that in FFA and FCCLA you are competing to be the best. Even though it makes you feel good inside, that feeling only lasts for a moment.
Everyday people compete whether its in sports, school, or just for fun. Competition is an everyday thing for some people and for others they just dont have a competitive bone in their body. Being competitive and having good sportsmanship should be in every high school and for the most part it is but to me it isnt for some schools...
competition is good for everyone and some need it more. when you are in sport you are competing to be the best or to do your best. if kids dont compete when they are younger they will have no push to get a better job or to try and do better in there job to beat someone else and get a higher ranking job.
Everything we do in school is competition basically: sports, clubs & even academics. Competition is good - it keeps you focused and makes you want to beat that person in front of you. Just as Jared said, there's competition in everything, especially in the real world. You learn how to compete and you learn how to work with others doing so.
Competition is good for us because it teaches us how to play by the rules and it also teached us how to work for what we work for. In band and FCCLA we work for what we earn
In school sports, competition plays a big role. Competition plays a big role in anything that we do every day. Competition helps you to push yourself to the next level and to accomplish goals that you may not have every thought you could have. While being competitive, you also learn sportsmanship. If you lose a game or don't place 1st in something, and you know you played to your full abibilty that helps with the sportsmanship aspect. Competitive sports also teach you how to be a teammate and help better you as a person also.
Sportmanship is good for your reputation and for competition. If you have bad sportmanship then no one will want to play against you again for making them fill like a loser, but if you have good sportsmanship and don't act out the person you played against won't feel so down about losing and will want to play you again.
Competition is good because it parts the good from the not so good, but when you stress "competition" on sports it becomes really annoying. There are other things than sports to compete with.
I think competition plays a very big role in life. Competition also plays a big part of jobs and sports. In sports competition only takes you so far. You also need sportsmanship. Your competition may take you to where you are so mad that you want to hurt someone and that is when you need sportsmanship.
I think that most people compete to have fun but others do it just for the glory. If you dont have sportsmanship then no one would want to play with or against you. Many people compete for many things like people compete for jobs, scholorships, and many other things.
