Study Links Facebook Use To Academic Performance.
USA Today (4/14, Marklein) reports that "a study of 219 students at Ohio State University being presented at a conference this week" strongly "suggests a link between" Facebook "and academic performance." According to the study conducted by Ohio State doctoral student Aryn Karpinski and Ohio Dominican University graduate student Adam Duberstein, "Students who said they used Facebook reported grade-point averages between 3.0 and 3.5; those who don't use it said they average 3.5 to 4.0." Furthermore, "Facebook users said they studied one to five hours a week, vs. non-users' 11 hours or more." Karpinski clarified, "'It cannot be stated (that) Facebook use causes a student to study less' or get lower grades...'I'm just saying that they're related somehow, and we need to look into it further,'" she added.
In an interview with Time Magazine (4/14, Hamilton) on Monday, Karpinski said that she was not "surprised by her findings, but notes that the study does not suggest Facebook directly causes lower grades, merely that there's some relationship between the two factors. 'Maybe [Facebook users] are just prone to distraction. Maybe they are just procrastinators,'" she added. But Time points out that "Karpinski and Duberstein's study isn't the first to associate Facebook with diminished mental abilities. In February, Oxford University neuroscientist Susan Greenfield cautioned Britain's House of Lords that social networks like Facebook and Bebo were 'infantilizing the brain into the state of small children,' by shortening attention span and providing constant instant gratification."
Nevertheless, Karpinski acknowledged that "there are a host of other variables that could be influencing the relationship, such as visits to different websites, like YouTube," Canada's Toronto Star (4/13, LaRose) added. Karpinski and Duberstein's survey included questions about "what other kinds of academic and non-academic websites" students use, "and Karpinski is hoping to analyze those responses in the future."
So how much time do you spend in on Facebook and how are your grades?

I think that is very interesting. I know I use facebook and my GPA is about 3.2 and that is what is showed. Yet, I also know Mrs. Hansen does use facebook and her GPA would be way greater than a 3.5. This is a very different ad.
I dont study and that could be the reason. There is no proof that these people study at all. I do know also that even if Mrs. Hansen had facebook during high school ;) she would still study for more than five hours a week.
haha =] I use facebook everyday and I still have a 4.0. The site in general isn't what's causing me to be lazy or anything (as we can see from all the effor I'm putting into your class ;) hehe) - I just lack the dedication/will power/ care to get my stuff done and done on time. I'm sick and tired of school, and can't WAIT to get outta' school. Facebook has nothing to do with how I spend my time, considering I usually get on it before bed anyways.
And who actually studies anymore? =D
I find this to be very true. Facebook takes away from my studying. I get told from teachers and my parents that I am much more capable of better grades. Facebook is a leading cause on why my grades aren't the best. Having it set as a homepage doesn't do me any justice either. I find this especially true when working on papers and other large assignments for Mrs. Hansen. I usually have to cope with "facebook will always be there, this deadline won't"
I dont think that facebook really hurts your GPA at all. I mean every one in school has it. Like all the smart kids have it and the kids that don't do good in class. If there was no facebook i think every ones GPA would still be the same. I also think it can help, say you are sick at school but you have all your books and your parents forgot to get your homework assingment. Then you can go on facebook and ask a friend or mabye a teacher.
I believe that if you are determined enough to have a high GPA in high school, you will work as hard as necessary to accomplish this. Facebook may distract many people, but they also need to learn that there are going to be things that distract us, and we need to ignore them and continue on with our work. Yes, facebook has taken over some of my study time, but if it wasn't facebook, it would be something else.
I agree that facebook can be a little distracting, but it definitely doesn't keep me from doing my best in school. I've always been taught to work my hardest and I earn my good grades and 4.0+ GPA. I do also spend quite a large amount of time on facebook, but it's not going to keep me from achieving my goals and it's definitely not going to lower my GPA.
I hope that this is still open for extra credit, but I think these statistics make a lot of sense. I may not be on facebook that much, but I can understand it as more of an escape from the bleak and stressful reality, but in the end it just sets you back even further. Facebook is a gateway to procrastination, and later a fall in grades, and these statistics only aide to the validity of this truth.
I dont know if extra credit is still available but here it goes.. I myself think this is a very interesting piece because I use facebook quite a bit a week and still happen to maintain the gardes in normally get. Granted if i didnt go on so often i would have more time for studying or doing work to the best of ones ability but, it all depends on the person using it and how bad they want they grades. If they use facebook and want a good grade, its possible to obtain it buy putting forth the effort.
