The debate about blocking content

Read the debate in this blog about blocking Internet content in schools for teachers and students. What should our school do? How do we police the unblock Internet if it were allowed?

I believe the school should block the obvious content that needs to be blocked. That said, I also think that they take it too far on some subjects. For example, sometimes we will have alloted class time to work on a paper, but then we cant even work on it because the website is blocked. I think teachers should be able to have the control to block or unblock a website if they approve of it. Students taking AP and honors classes need all the time they can get, and if a class period cant be used simply because a website it blocked that is really hurting them.

I think that the school should block the content that is inappropriate for school, but sometimes the school will block certain websites because students play games. Our school has blocked the content on the debate so I can't read it how ridiculous. Although if students need certain information that just so happens to be on a website that they would very much need it stinks to be you. For me our school seems to block all the websites we used to play when we were elementary kids. I understand that the websites might not have been very educational, but our teachers didn't care that we were on those sites. All they wanted was for us to stay quiet while we were in the computer lab. Basically there are certain sites that should be blocked and certain sites that should be unblocked.

I think that instead of the tech coordinator blocking all of the websites that fall under a certain category, it should be up to the teachers and they should still be able to view the website before they think it gets blocked. I think that when a teacher plans a fun activity on the internet and you can't even do it because the website is blocked is stupid. You have to send an email like a week in advance in order to do what you want to do. Since honors students are normally involved in other activities out of school, it really sucks when we have to what we could have done in class on our own time, add more why don't you! Just saying once again, that i think it is pretty stupid when a website falls under a category, when it isn't neccessary to be blocked.

There are many different ways you can go about this subject. It does get very annoying when you try to google some one for a project and everything comes up blocked. In our day and age, we know that guns are 'bad' and sex isn't right. I don't think that the content need to be blocked on the schools computers. Games and such, yes, go ahead and block those, but things that are important to project areas, I don't believe need to be blocked.
