Is the ability to read well important in life? What happens to those who choose not to read or not to develop weak reading skills? How should teachers respond to those students who make comments about not having to read much in the real world?

The ability to read well is extremely important in life, it helps expand your vocabulary and it helps you to learn about other people's past and understand what could happen in the future. If a student responds to a teacher like that, the teacher should say how many jobs in which you have to read things, or how many car manuals you have to understand, etc.
Kasen, It is frustrating to know how important reading is, but be unable to express to students that importance. Most are in denial. They believe that they will rarely have to read in the jobs they are interested in and see no point in improving reading skills past the point of just getting by. I love to see studenets reading in school. That is why I am always talking about and recommending books that I have read.
The ability to read well is crucial in understanding life itself. If you don't read and don't have the chance to understand the past or even someone else's experiences through reading, how are you to really understand anyone else? Life, to me is about learning and if you can't understand other people, can you really understand yourself? I don't read much on my own, but the things I've had to read for class have helped me tremendously in reality. Go Ask Alice was the most inspirational book to me and I still remember it today.(I have horrible memory and if I remember it, it must have really meant something) If teachers are really worried about students' thinking, then they should explain to them their ideas and maybe change a few minds in the process. To me though, people have their own opinions and some may change once they find out what really happens in the real world; they'll find out sooner or later.
Well the ability to read is important because you have to use it in your life more then just school. And reading helps you to learn words that you didn't know before. Plus reading is fun and you get to became what ever you want. I used to think reading is a waste of time till i readed the book the blooding. Reading is very important you use it in every day things.
I think that being able to read isn't that important, but you should know the basics of reading so just in case that you need a job you can tell that employer that you can read. This doesn't mean that you have to know the biggest words in the dictionary, but know words that are in your vocabulary range.
The ability to read is unbelievably important to modern day life. Besides expanding your vocabulary, it takes you to other places and challenges you to imagine and not sit on your butt watching T.V. If you like reading it better prepares you for the work force in the future. No matter what you are interested in there is a book out there for you.
Reading is very important in life even if you don't think so. Reading is benificial for people who have developed there vocabulary from figuring out words in a good book. Reading is our livlihood. Just about everyone in the United States reads something every day. Doesn't matter what it is and if your reading skills are weak or none at all you might get a lower paying job than what you wanted for your life.
if you are not able to read well then it will show in your writing skills. the people who have good writing skills read alot. i constantaly read all the time and people look at me weird for it. to improve your writing skills you must read, it will help increase your vocabulary and maybe even raise your grades. if you want your students to improve then you need to push your students to read or to force them to. and make sure they are reading so that you know they are improving.
Jamie- do you think there are many high schoolers who understand themselves? I agree that reading about other may just help us learn more about ourselves. I feel sorry for those who read little. Just think of all the learning that they are not experiencing.
Ashley- Losing yourself in a good book is addicting, isn't it? I love that you pointed out the vocabulary benefits of reading often. Practice your reading and you will get better at it and learn amazing things at the same time.
Shelby- Have you ever heard of the adage- "Use it or lose it"? The same applies to reading. Reading often helps to keep the brain active and helps you to practice the skills involved. Read Brooke's comments. She hit the nail on the head.
Vanessa- thanks for bringing up the link between reading and writing. Those who read often, usually find writing less difficult than those who don't read often. Exposure to different forms of writing opens up all sorts of ideas for the writer.
It seems that the idea of reading improving your vocabulary is a popular and true idea. Reading also fosters imagination and writing. Who knew how much reading could do for us? WOW!!
Reading is very important you have to know how to read or you will struggle in life. Reading anything is very important knowing what signs say, books, magazines, or even homework assignments are cruical to know. You won't get to far if you don't know how to read. Reading is something everyone should know how to know, if you don't you better learn! You will be super confused if you don't know how.
Yeah, a lot of kids don't pay attention to the importance of reading because they didn't learn how fun it can be. I can sit for hours on end and just read because I know how fun it is. I definitely think it is very important. I even saw a show that demonstrated how important it was, and that every job requires the ability to read, even plumbing! If teachers have problems with their kids understanding its importance, they should consider making a project that really demonstrates how important it is to read in "real life". Have them interview people with jobs that they don't think require reading to do. Then they would see how much reading affects jobs. They probably don't want to end up as slums on the street, so it will probably encourage them to read more. Besides, it isn't just the suffering from jobs that you get when you don't read. You also don't understand the joy and satisfaction of a good book. You won't know what it is like to forget your worries and relax. I have experienced that feeling and it inspires me to read when I think there is nothing to do.
