A good story

What makes a story a good story? What does a good story have to have so that you will read it? Is is suspense, plot, a unique character? What is the best story you have ever read?

To have a good story you must have good charecters and diolague. You must have many descriptions of what happened and you can't just have a boring story where noone talks. It has to have a good intro so it catches the readers attention. If you have a good intro your readers will have a desire to read your story. Your middle has to have a a problem. Your problem must not be predictable. If your story is predictable your readers will just go and think they know what is going happen. If they know what is happening they will quit reading or not be interested. You must have a solution and maybe even more than one problem. But if you have to many problems your story won't be very exciting. Your ending must be your solutions and you have to solve everything.

A good book to read is House by Frank Perritti. It has everything a good book should have. If your into mystery or thriller, it's the book for you. It's intresting and draws you into the plot. So if your into thriller or mystery, read this book.

Chris, I love mysteries and books that scare me, too. That is pretty much all I read in my limited free time. I love books that are in series and just can't wait for the next books in all the series I read. Keep reading.

A good story needs detail. An author writes, "The space ship flew off into outer space." The author could detail it more by saying, "The luminous space ship blasted vigorously into the darkness beyond." Most readers love suspense. An author writes, "The killer was in the closet." That's not very scary. A writer could write, "Deep in the closet, ready with a sharp knife, was the killer." If a story contains more detail, the readers will be locked to the story.

Andrew. Have you read any other Peretti book? There is a series about heaven and hell and spirituality and one about big foot. They make you think and are scary. I love him as an author.

A good story to me needs to have great amounts of detail, so it feels like you are right there. The topic has to be clear and a picture must always be seen. My favorite books are the Dear Diary books. In each book, you are taken into a different time and place. In one book, you will be traveling the Oregon Trail, and in another, you are riding the Titanic hoping to come to America. Most of the books tell of a fictional character of the past, but some tell of different problems and hardships that may be going on now. These books have huge amounts of detail, so it feels like you are that person. I rarely read another kind of book. I would really recomend reading one of them.

I think that a good story includes lots of suspence and lots of unexpected twists and turns, but I dislike endings that do not end but leave you to guess. I also like books with lots of action or combat. Historical fiction or Fantasy are my favorate type of books to read. My favorite book series is by Terry Brooks. It is a very complicated series to understand sometimes, but I like them anyway.

A good story needs to have a ton of details. If an author simply just wrote, the cat climbed up the tree, the author could explain why the cat climbed up the tree. Another thing is a good story needs to be able to have details that are so precise that it creates a vivid image in your head. My favorite types of books are those that have mysteries and you have to keep creating pictures in your head to think what may be going on.

For me, a good story should be based on somthing that has actually happened to a person or a group of people. The best story that I have ever read, is A Child Called It.

Sean- I hate predictable books. I love twists and unexpected events. The best books are those that solve one problem but then create another. This makes for a series of books that I just can't wait for.

Halie- that is a great book and there are two or three others by that author that discuss the same issues. You should check out the school library or the Carnegie library- I think they have all three in one volume.

So Brady- what types of books are interesting for you or catch your attention? Your entry does not discuss that.

Aaron, it seems to me that you like not only details, but also varied sentences orders and non-traditional sentence structures. I like to read details that flow and create some sort of suspense or foreshadowing...hints at what is to come.

Emily- what a great way to learn history!! And it has to be more exciting than a history book. Keep reading.

Sheila- I love books that leave the reader hanging and waiting for the next book to solve the anxiousness. I understand the appeal that Terry Brooks has for fantansy fans, but I don't really read that much of his work. Maybe his novels should be on my summer reading list.

Kara- I believe that most people who love to read create pictures in their heads. That is the only way to read. Most movies disappoint me because they don't match the movies in my head.

It seems that most of you agree that detail in writing is important. Please remember that idea when you write.

A good story is a story with vivid details and has an eerie plot - maybe one to make you think a little. Dialogue and heavily described characters are a must. If the author simply just writes and has no clear meaning of the stuff he/she is writing, it's boring and lackadaisical. The best story I ever read was Go Ask Alice, it's an extremely inspirational book - it's great. Anyone who's reading this should check it out - there's 4 books of it in the library. :)
