What can people find out about you on Facebook and MySpace?

I heard in interesting story on the news today about how police in Sioux Falls are using pictures posted in My Space and Facebook as evidence to arrest and try underage alcohol and tobacco and drug users. What do you think?. This is all legal and social networking groups offer no privacy regardless of all the safeguards used to protect users. Will this change the way that you use these networking sites?

Wow, that is really serious stuff. I mean I know that they do that for college students and stuff for jobs and things like that but holy wow! Well I hope no one around here gets in trouble.

I believe everything that is posted on the WWW is accessible to anyone searching it. What you post and let others see is ultimately up to you; I know some people don't think about that when they post things but think of the reputation you are giving off to others if what you're posting is inappropriate. I think it's perfectly fine to use it as evidence - I guess if you're posting it and don't care...that's your own fault, no one elses.

Niice! Well, if you're stupid enough to put pictures of you smoking, or completely wasted, then, well, it's your own issue. Anyone can get access to your Facebook/Myspace account, so it's pretty dumb to put lovely pictures of you drunk on there. Will this change the way I use it? Of course not. I'm not that type of kid...and hopefully I will never be. But I think it's a good idea--to use it to arrest underage consumers. Good thing nothing on my Facebook account is overly bad =)

Well, it seems that some of you have good heads on your shoulders and have realistic expectations of just what the WWW allows people to do. Could Facebook and My Space accounts be used to promote positive aspects of someone? Any examples?

I don't actually use myspace or facebook, but I have to say it doesn't really surprise me that kids are stupid enough to post pictures of themselves doing stupid things on these sites. I don't understand why you would want those pictures exposed anyway especially since you can get in legal trouble for it. Is it really worth it? Plus things like that really affect a person's reputation. I have heard lots of people talk about how stupid someone's pictures on facebook make them look and seem as a person. It is just a cry for attention.

i just typed a couple paragraphs and it all disappeared...i shall try again. i believe that thsi could be used to your advantage if you were to use this in a positive light by having the organizations you belong in such as honor roll, society of high school scholars, etc. people may also post pictures of them volunteering their time in a community or other possible objectives in an enlightening manner so if their employer should be doing a background check and find them on the internet they would not have provocative pic.s or bad info about themselves for everyone to see. unless of course they are trying to degrade themselves.

Facebook and MySpace say that they are private to only your "friends" but I definitly agree with prosecutors using pictures ect. against certain individuals. If people don't want to get into trouble then they probably shouldn't post anything on their site that they don't want anyone to see. It all about using common sense.

Those accounts surely can show good aspects of students. They could post the complete opposite of illegal moves such as doing community work, helping others, or even what they post on others walls or pages - words of encouragement, etc. If they have their goals, plans, etc on their page that is probably a positive aspect of using the WWW.

Not everyone can see what you do on myspace cause you can put it on private and only the people who are your friends can see it. But its no surpise that stupid kids, people get caught for showing bad pictures, and so on.

Okay, first of all it doesn't matter if your account is private, people can still see what you write and stuff. Example: you and a friend go to a party and she takes some pictures of you and her having a grand ol' time drinking and all that jazz, you don't put any pictures on your facebook but your friend does. Another way is that when you post something it shows up on other people's facebook homepage where they tell people what all their friends are doing. If you make an album or write on someone's wall, everyone can read it. Also, teachers are now getting facebook so if you put something on their that is naughty the teachers can now see what you write and all the stuff. Really, it's not going to change the way I use facebook b/c first of all, i don't drink and if for some random and out of this world reason i do, i won't put any pics on the internet or any of that jazz. But really, i don't see myself losing that many brain cells between now and my 21st birthday to start drinking or anything like that,

This will not change the way I use these networks because first of all I don't do anything illegal and I don't post anything on there that will get me into trouble. I do have friends that better watch what they put on there because it looks like they could get into some big trouble. And for the privacy issue, anyone with a little computer knowledge can see whatever you have posted on these networks. I don't put a lot of personal stuff on it anyway so I believe I am pretty safe.

Does anyone actually believe this statement? Even bank security is not that safe. Computer hackers and those with incredible computer knoweldge could get to an account in seconds and look at everything. In this digital world no amount of protection, encryption or privacy statements can protect 100% of the time and to believe that is naive. Wake up!!!
Once you post something on the internet it is there forever (unitl it is written over, like that is every going to happen in the enormous internet space) and it doen't take a genius to find it.

Well, i know that their are creepy people out in the world, so why would people actually want to post pictures of themselves out there. Yes, dont get me wrong myspace and facebook are great things to have but if i knew that anyone could get into it, i wouldnt put pictures or personal stuff about me on there.

It's not that Facebook and Myspace are a bad thing to have. It's what people put on there. I've read what some people have written on there, and, jeeze, maybe they should get into some trouble.

And Sarah, people get those JUST to put pictures on there, and what I find funny is that people on the Redfield network are actually saying they want to find a relationship on Facebook...uh...how do you know if they're not a bunch of fat, middle aged men looking for a free thrill?

There should be rules as to what can go on those sites. Maybe then we wouldn't have as many problems.

Facebook , Myspace have everything you need to know about someone , but even if you try to block your page so the person has to add you before they can see you well what about the people that started the site , they can go on their anyways. If you put pictures of your self acting completey dumb well what do you expect, and if your dumb enough to add people you dont even know they are going to find everything about your self, so its your own fault if they find you

Kirten you know there's an option to block your page from non-friends, right?

True Aaron, but come on, how hard is it to hack a computer, let alone a webpage!!

People who have Facebook or My space shouldnt put info out on themselves you need to make it so they can just know your name and that is it. If people dont want to have people stalking them then why do they have facebook or my space, if you do have your name on facebook or my space you should make up a fake name then let people you know or want to have it tell them what your name is.
