Credit for sports participation

I read an interesting article today. What do you think?

PE, yes. But actual sports? No. Not everybody is able to do sports so therefore they're unable to earn that credit. Sports are VOLUNTARY!!! Students participating in sports should get enough satisfaction with the sport as is instead with the credits. Would I be mroe likely to do sports if I could earn credits? No. It wouldn't change my views any other way. I would do sports for enjoyment, not for another grade.

I think this is actually a great idea, especially because it's not just sports. In this school, ever elective gets credit. It listed band, chorus, plays, journalism- even dance. If all extra curricular activities, that take more time than just average school work, are being rewarded with 4 extra credits, why should sports only receive two? They all require extra time & effort, and regradless of the reason of participation, all should get the benifits of wanting to excell. I think it's a great incentive, especially with the harder class loads, and also think it would be an awesome addition to Redfield High School ciriculum.

So how would coaches assess students and give grades in a sport like VB or FB? Would there have to be tests and phsyical assessments? I can't see coaches in our school doing that. I believe that it would become a random grading system- A for being on varsity, B for being on JV and C for the C team.

I dont think that you should recieve credit for sports participation becacause thats exactly what it is (participation). You are already graded on your abilities by playing time and your regular classes give you your smarts. Of course there are those people that are gifted and will play professional ball so they dont need to be that smart. Sports are just for enjoyment no credit.

But how would that be fair? Not everybody is great at sports, but they really enjoy being in it. So, according to your grading scale Mrs. H, people who suck would be getting worse grades, therefore hurting their GPA. If that was to happen, you'd see a decline in the amount of students in sports. Sports should be an optional activity, an AFTER-SCHOOL activity, and definitely not one to be graded.

it shouldnt be if you make the team....say in wrestling you have two wrestlers that weight the same and the one is the varisity and the other can go up a weight class because you got a state champion in the room that cant be beat and the kid is unable to drop a weight class......it for the grade it should be how are you work or if you slack and screw around in the corner while others are working to be the best they can be.....kids should get credits for sports....it takes a lot of time out of your day and you miss a lot of school for some sports..the others that dont play sports and just go home and either do nothing or just do homework should have all A's....they have nothing else going on

I dont think you should get a grade for sports but you should get some type of credit for being in sports cuz you miss a lot of school for sports. I know you say then dont be in sports if you dont want to miss school but then your not having fun in HS....This doesnt have much to do with the topic but i wanted to put it in anyway... Sports take alot of your time bc of practice and games especially during basketball/wrestling season and track season therefore i think teachers should be a little more understanding when giving out big assignments and what not.

If you’re in sports you shouldn’t get a grade because not everybody is out for sports. Not all kids are really talented in sports. I agree with Ashley kids who aren’t as good in sports as others would get a lower grade and it would lower their GPA. That wouldn’t be fair at all. You have to treat everybody fairly and equally.

Sports should be voluntary not mandatory. If you like sports you should go out for them because it’s what you enjoy doing. You might not be the best, but you’re trying your hardest. Some people like to run, wrestle, cheerlead, play basketball, play soccer, and play volleyball because that’s what they enjoy to do in their spare time.

Credit for sports that sounds great idea though I think I would fail at any tests for volleyball that would be like tryouts all over again, but anyways a coach could maybe grade on the effort that a student put into a sport that way they wouldn't have to be good, just try hard...hmm...very tough decision they have to make.

If they ever create it at credit I would die. I can't play sports very well. I mean if it is credit than pretty soon they might require everyone to play. If they do it for sports than they should do it for plays and oral interp, but if it is just sports than there is no point. If it for credit than we would have so much trouble.

I think you should earn a credit in high school sports. Yeah, i realize that not everyone can do sports but some of us can and we should get some credit for it. Just like Olivia said band and chorus are given a credit and they are not mandatory and so are sports. I don't really think we shold be graded but we should just get one credit point per sport per year.
