Wikipedia- to use or not to use

McLeod's article is interesting. I don't let my students use Wikipedia as a source in their papers. Should I be? What do think about its readability? What is a wiki any way? Suggestions on use in school?

i think you should be able to use it cuz people should be smart enough to know if it true or not

I do go to wikipedia a lot for information, and most of it is true. Sure you got jackasses who put in false information, but like chris said, somebody should be smart enough to change it.

Use it as a source? No. There are other ways to find sources besides using Wikipedia, and it's a good way to help us become better at our hunting-down-information skills (haha who knows?).

I'm not sure what you're asking by what a wiki is..? Maybe it's an easier way to find information? Possibly?

OK Chris- Are most students really smart enought to know if it si true or not? Do most students really care? Will most check it out to see if the information is true? I don't think that your reason is valid.

Well they should be and if they dont care and put stuff thats not true on the paper they will learn and there grade will suffer if they dont.

and if they are to lazy to make sure that it is right they shouldnt use it other then that i think you should be able to use it but have reasons to back it up

I believe that you should go to wikipedia and in order to check to make sure that they are right, check their sources and see if they are reliable.

I think that wikipedia is a decent source. I mean how many times have to actually seen some garbage not even related to the subject. I have never personally found false information on the site. I would say that yes, there are better sites out there, buy you could use wikipedia.

I think you shouldn’t let kids use it for a source because you don’t know if that’s the truth or not. So if you find the same information on a different website then I think it would be okay. But just in case you should use a different site so you know that it’s accurate information because you don’t want silly information in your paper or essay.

Now seriously? Everyone knows at the bottom of the wiki there is a list of sources. If you ever go to wiki and look at the sources all the information is copied word for word from the websites with the exception of a few popular wiki spots that are influenced by an overflow of info(Which is how wrong information is passes throughout the net).

At school especially, when we can't always use the sites at the bottom of the wiki. If we can't access the sources, then we can't use the wiki? No-that is obsurd! A cashe of info that we can't use is preposterous and ingnorant.

In summary, why can't we just use wiki? Maybe cite where we get the info? I don't know, but I believe wiki is reliable.

I personally wouldn't rely on Wikipedia as a source of information because it is very easy to change the information. One day Wikipedia will say one thing and then after the people who manage the website view it, it might not be there the next day.

To me i dont think that students should use it in their papers because it is not a reliable website. People can get in and change the information on it very easily and students grades suffer because they put the wrong information in their paper. Just because its on the internet does not make it true.
