Revisiting an old post on leadership

I posted this in 2007 when I first set up my blog for students. Some interesting comments came up.
With Homecoming happening next week and the decision for king and queen and whether to initiate or haze underclassman looming in the future, leadership will definately be in the spotlight.
What makes a good leader?

Is is charisma, charm, good looks, a winning smile, a powerful speaking voice, or is it something that is indescribable?
What traits should one look for in a good leader?
Who are some good leaders from the past and today? Why are or were they so good?
How do students show leadership? Is it important to do so?
One student commented, "Students who show initiative in school, and set an example. They don't have to be in sports or they don't have to be popular, they don't have to be the smartest to put it simply, they influence people. "
Another posted, "A good leader should have the following: a powerful and persuasive voice, an open mind, a friendly character, a quick thinker, a good listener, and one to make good decisions in difficult times."

So what makes a good leader? Can anyone be one? Does being a leader make a difference in what happens?

Leaders are made not born. They are the ones who step up in times of trouble and in times of good times. They are not afraid to stand up for what they believe. Others follow them, whether it's the things they say or their personality or smile. They somehow get people to follow them. They don't always do the right thing though. There are good leaders and bad leaders and we need to choose which we follow.

Honestly I think leadership stands for someone who can lead others to the right choice and teach them not to be a follower. It doesn’t matter if you’re the star quarter back or if you have a 4.0 GPA. A real leader will step up and do what’s right, not just for him or her, but for others too. It takes a lot of courage and responsibility, but to me you earn those as you grow older. No I’m not saying that you have to be of age to be a leader, but as age get higher, maturity sets in and leadership is earned.

Having charm, good looks, a winning smile, a powerful speaking voice, and charisma are all great things to have, but if you dont have all of then that doesnt mean you cant be a leader. Being a leader is something different, something deaper then just looks. Leadership is attitude and knowing whats right and wrong. Being able to be strong enough to stand up to people that are doing something wrong. Showing people how to do something and helping your piers out. Leadership doesnt mean that you are any better then the next person. It just means that you arent afraid to stand up and say i know whats right. Leaders are made not born. If you would like to be a leader, you can earn that role with hard work.
