South Dakota's smoking ban

The smoking ban went into effect last week. I love the idea of going to eat at Terry's and not having to sit in the smoky air. I will be able to go to the bowling alley and not come home with a headache from the cigarette smoke. So how will the ban affect you and your family? Do you think that the number of people who smoke will decline because of the ban?

I am personally torn between supporting the smoking ban and being against it. On the one hand, it should be the business owner's decision when it comes to how the run their business. On the other hand, I am going to love going out to eat with my mom and not having to deal with the embarrassing, on display feeling that I get whenever she leaves the table for a cigarette, leaving me alone. I have many times wondered why she is able to go almost all day at work or an entire meal at home without smoking but still has to leave the table two or three times when we go out to eat. This will probably increase business in the long run. With that comment, I am thinking of one specific group of people: new parents. I can only imagine how tired people become in the first few months and years of their child's life. Just listening to my mom over the year's has ingrained in me that sometimes, you just don't have the energy to make supper. It must be so nice for parents to be able to take their infants and young children out to eat without having to worry about them getting sick or being allergic to the smoke. A great example of this is Applebee's. I went to Applebee's for lunch over the weekend and was shocked at seeing not just the typical college kids and middle-aged sports fans, but parents and grandparents dining with small children and babies because they didn't have to worry about the effect of the smoke on the immune systems of the children. All in all, this is probably a change for the better.

Smoking doesn't really have that much effect on my family. The only exception would have to be is going out to eat and having to sit through a diner and your neighboring table is sitting their smoking up the joint. But that no longer will be a problem, which I LOVE. But I do feel bad almost in a way because what happened to our "freedom." But then I say well guess what your "freedom" shouldn't be killing me! That is what really decides it all for me though. Because I hate the fact that people will go out and smoke and not think of what effect that not only has on them, but for the surrounding people. They can kill themselves fine, but I don't want to be effected in the long term by second had smoking.

I support the smoking ban because I hate having to smell it whenever my family went out to eat. While it is true that it is the person's choice, I don't think other people should have to deal with them. Second hand smoke can be just as bad as regular smoking in some situations. Business will not decrease for anyone because if you can't smoke at one bar, you can't smoke at any other bar either. For me personally, I will enjoy eating at Terry's much more now that my clothes won't smell like smoke when I leave. In my family, we only have one smoker. My aunt is very good about doing it outside and not around people. Her clothes and house do not smell like smoke, so I suppose it does not affect me to much. I would prefer that people just stop smoking even though it may be very hard for them. The world would be a much easier place where we wouldn't have to make laws like this and children wouldn't be exposed to tobacco.

i like the nonsmoking ban. It's not for the same reasons that other people do, though. Its going to sound a little evil of me to say, but I like it because it makes it harder for smokers to continue smoking:). cynical, I know! I just cannot stand smoking. My mother started smoking about a year ago, and I've been nagging at her to quit FOREVER but she doesn't. I just kind of like the idea that now it will just be that much harder for her to keep it up. I think this ban will be a nice little incentive for all of those people who have been meaning to stop and just haven't had a reason to. Maybe after a while they'll just start to realize that, with the new ban in affect, its just not worth all the trouble they have to go through to get a cigarette. I really do hope it helps people stop, because I hate seeing all those commercials on TV about people who die at a young age due to smoking. If you want to die or something, bungee jump, sky dive, ect. There are cooler ways to live on the edge, i assure you:)

I love that the smoking ban went into effect because now when a few of my friends want to go to the bowling alley to have fun, we won't have to worry about having to go home and immediately have to shower to get that gross smoke smell off. This ban doesn’t really have an effect on my family because no one in my family smokes. I do think that now people will be more likely to go out and eat with their family because they won’t have to worry about the smoke smell. I also think that this will reduce the number of smokers because if kids don’t see people smoking in public, it will more than likely be an unusual sight to them.

I know there are going to be people that are torn like Maggie said she likes the fact that she can go eat with her mom and not have to smell the smoke but thinks it should be the business owner’s decision. I am personally in favor of it because I have it when people smoke and the only thing it is going to do to the businesses it increases the people that come in. the people that smoke are not going to leave because they can’t smoke there because they can’t go smoke any wares. You are going to get the people that don’t like smoke to come in now because there will be no smoke so it is just a winning situation

I absolutely love the smoking ban! It may sound like wishful thinking, but my parents are smokers and I feel that, because of the smoking ban, they won't have as many places to smoke since they don't smoke in the house. If the smoking ban led them to stop smoking, I would love it even more than I already do. Unfortunately, I think that most restaraunts, in Redfield anyway, will suffer from it. Take Terry's for example: almost everyone that goes there smokes like a chimney. Now that those people can't smoke there, they are less likely to go there. On the other hand, those smokers may just have to go outside, smoke, and come back in. That's what my parents do, before and after the smoking ban. They won't admit it, but I think that they are ashamed to let people see them smoke.

I love the fact that the smoking ban was passed and that it went into effect. I love not having to sit there in a restaurant and hold my breath the hold time because I hate it when people smoke and the smell of smoke. Smoking is bad for the people who smoke and for the people who don't smoke, but are sitting around the people who are smoking. But I do feel bad because some businesses my lose some customers because the people who used to smoke in public places might not go out as much. But I still feel it is the best thing. I remember my cheer coach talking to us and telling us that she was glad it passed because she has one kid and is pregnant with the other one. She was glad that she could go out to Terrie's while she was pregnant and before she didn't want her other kid exposed to the smoke. I think that the ban is good because then more families may go out together and not have to worry about the smoke.

The smoking ban is an excellent idea, and I couldn't be happier about the decision. I hate going into resturants or even going to get a movie at One stop and comingout smelling like I just got done smoking a pack of cigarettes. The number of people smoking will hopefully decline because I hope people realize the horrible outcome smoking can cause a person.

Ok people. The smoking ban was passed, and all of you guysmention how you don't have to smell like smoke anymore. In all reality, unless these businesses rip out all otheir carpets, the smell will still be there. Yes, I am in favor of the smoking ban, but the owners should have the right to allow it. Smoking is a person's coice and they should be allowed to do it if they choose.

I also like the idea of the smoking being ban. I just saw at Terry's there was poeple that had to come out in the cold to smoke. I think that it may also cut down on the people smoking, because then instead of sitting there and just pull out a cig they acutally have to get up and go out in the cold in order to smoke. The only thing that came to my mind was what if someone was really wasted and they went out to smoke and then they end up walking in the road and don't realize it and get hit. I think that it is different because normally when you think of a bar you picture people drinking and smoking. It is going to be a different view now since the smoking is ban.
