Do teachers really understand?

I have been reading and hearing a lot lately about how teachers need to get in touch with the culture of the generation that they teach- the millennial generation. This generation is described in the following:
Wally Block's definition as a father
Generation X versus the Millennial Generation
The Progressive view of Millennial

My question is: do your teachers really understand this generation (their needs, their use and need of technology, their need to equate friends and family, their need to multitask and seek the Internet to answer questions, their need to rewrite or break the rules, etc)?

How do we as teachers try to teach this generation successfully?

The teachers need to know that we know more than what their generation learned when they were in school. We have more technology too. In the future the next generation will have more technological advantage. Why the heck do they have are you smarter than a fifth grader? It shows that kids know more in some ways than adults. If teachers can't understand what we are learning than what is the point of them teaching it.

I think some teachers know what is going on.Some don't, but i don't think they necessarily need to. Maybe it's a good idea to be able to connect more with the students, but you can still teach well without being up to date on every little thing about this generation. I think about half the teachers understand us, and even those who don't can be fairly good teachers.

I think most teachers, from my experience of Redfield, know what is going on and know how to connect with the students. Granted, there are some older teachers and they either don't know how to connect better with the students to help them learn because of changing times or they've just been working here 40 years so it's just another day at work - who knows for sure.

Most of the younger teachers know how students learn easier and know how to get their point across in a more active manner. More hands-on activities keep the kids awake at least.

Well, given that some teachers have children our age they sort of know how to handle our age group; but some other usually older teachers need to take some time to get to know the generation and how we function i guess. This would make our education more fufilling not like spending a month on capitalization as a senior in English we SHOULD know what does and doesn't need to be capitalized.

I believe that teachers have an idea of what is going on. They hang out with students everyday and learn and hear all about things of this generation. I know there are some teachers (that will remain unnamed) that have absolutely NO clue. However, there are teachers that try too hard to understand this generation and only succeed to make a fool of themselves. In general, teachers have to adapt to this generation's customs or otherwise they won't be able to function as teachers.

The Teachers should know what we like. They are around us all the time. and most of them have kids. They just like to be mean cuase it helps us get ready for the real world. And they are just pushing us to be better. And they do understand us. they just need to try to make things in school funner.

I agree with drew and travis. the teachers do give alot of homework and are strict. But they do not understand us. because some students act different in clase then out of school.
