Jim Burke- a noted and well-published English teacher has written about the 7 personae that students will have to master in order to succeed in the world. They are listed below. Which ones do we teach in our school. Which have you mastered? Which do you need work on?
Let’s look at the seven personae. Burke’s (2009, pp. 13-14) framework outlines the following:
Storyteller: “everyone must be able to use a range of means and media to tell the story of an experience, an event, a situation, or a problem and its proposed solutions;…we must be equally able to understand and analyze the stories…others tell us.”
Philosopher: “[students] must be able to understand and grapple with [complex ideas] by posing questions and considering a subject from multiple angles;…they must be able to convey their own perspective on and response to these ideas through words, images, numbers.”
Historian: “we must know how to gather, assess, and apply background knowledge relevant to the text or task at hand in order to comprehend its ideas and arguments…[students] must also know how to reason like a historian.”
Anthropologist: “[students] must all develop the ability to understand not only our own but also others’ cultures…developing the ability to observe, examine, and communicate insights about these cultures, for such skills are fundamental to our personal and economic success.”
Reporter: “Everyone today must be able to watch for, locate, evaluate, and analyze a remarkable amount of data from different sources;…we must develop and continually refine our ability to investigate, research, and navigate…[the] sea of information…[and] convey the results.”
Critic: “We all need the skills critics use to evaluate and analyze a text…[and] now it must also…examine retirement plans, medical options, and competing products and services.”
Designer: “Design is such a crucial aspect of any text…we need to know how to ‘read’ for it, noticing the features used to invest the text with meaning…we must consider design when we compose documents, create online content, produce videos, or otherwise communicate with people.”

I have definitely been told a time or two that I need to work on my storytelling abilities. I can tell someone about an event or experience, but I guess I don’t do it very efficiently. I don't think that many teachers in the Redfield School teach much about Philosophy. Not many students look at things from different angles. Anthropology is something that I would absolutely enjoy finding out more information about. Learning about new cultures is interesting and exciting because it gives you a new perspective on life. I believe that I am a fairly decent reporter. I am convinced that the Redfield educators do a terrific job with this area.
Well unlike Gabby, i believe we are taught a little bit of every personae. In almost every english class i have taken we have been required to right a story of our past or an exciting, depressing, or other parts of our lives. All though most students don't take philosophy, most of us are tought some part of it by our teachers. math for example we have to look at every possible way to find out the anwser along with other sciences. In some ways history and government and buissness classes teach you alitle about historians. I dont really know how to assosiate Anthropology to school but i guess Sociology has something to do with it because you study people and learn to understand them. i guess you can say that math, accounting, and buisness management classes would help you out with reporting. And you can assosiate critic with english classes. Design gets to me to but i am sure there is something in our school that teaches it. Most of these you don't realize you are getting tought becasue they are tought to us in other ways.
I believe that I have been taught some of every personae. I'm not saying that I necessarily learned it through school, but I have learned quite a bit, especially these past three years. I am not sure if my storytelling skills are that great, but I sure have my whole ordeal with Carl down. :P
Personally, I'm not sure if I could ever have enough of one certain personae. They all seem to help with life and more issues occur to those who do not have, or have very little, of the personae listed...
Well, I would have to say that I haven't mastered really any of them, but I do have a start on most of them. I like to tell stories and it is kindof difficult for me to decipher some of people's stories. Philosopher, I really don't know much about that. I really like to learn about history and how people made such big mistakes, but it is kindof hard to reason. I really don't know about anthropology, but I once considered being one, but I figured that I would be spending most of my time alone, so I decided against it. I can criticize people and their acts quite easily, and for the most part I can take criticism, but sometimes it is pretty hard. The description of Design is kinda confusing, so I really don't know if I have a start on it or not...
