In these tough economic times, when federal and state governments fail to recognize the importance of eduating young people, and therefore, fail to fund education properly all while holding schools, teachers and students to standards that are, if not impossible to reach, then improbable to reach, schools are cutting those programs that do not directly apply to students passing the test (which tests only math, reading, English and science). That means schools cut art and music programs and staff.
Education Secretary Arne Duncan's speech discusses the need for art and music and social studies classes to create a well-rounded student. Read his speech and discuss what you think a well-rounded student should learn in school and out.

What is a well-rounded student? In my opinion a well-rounded student is an individual who is very good in school and sports and other extra-curricular actives. The student gets good grades on the honor roll. Is a leader, helps others, is nice to everyone, stays positive and is always prepared for class. The students who are well-rounded show a lot of integrity, competition, aggressive in ways, and keep their grades up. Always gets their homework done and will willingly help others with theirs. Students who are well-rounded also care about what colleges they will attend and the scholarships they will receive. They are very into themselves and their lives ahead of time.

In my opinion a well rounded student is nice to everyone and is ever negative and always caring for the people around them. Alot of kids these days just walk threw the halls and are mouthy and that they rule the world well things will probably most likely start changing pretty soon. Well rounded students dont get aggressive toward eachother and others and are rude and disrespectful. They mind there P's and Q's and watch what they say.I think the well rounded students should be more noticed and not just blown off because most of the well rounded students dont get noticed for what they've done its always the mean, rude, and disrespectful people.
In my opinion, a well-rounded student is simply one that excells in school, but has a life outside of it that is complete with relationships and hobbies. Sports are a nice touch to becoming well-rounded, but I think that too much emphasis is placed on them. The student should maintain a respectable grade point average, be respectful to teachers and to the learning environment of other students, and simply have all neccesary work done by the time class begins. So long as they fit a balanced combination of social and education responsibilities, I would consider them to be well-rounded.
