Interesting article. Genetics or environment?

Personally, I do believe people are born with a personality, not a blank mind. Yes, there are always outside influences that have effect to that personality, but I think the ability to learn and retain information is a natural trait; if the child retains the information that is taught when they are young, then that is just part of how they were born.
However, a child can be born smart but not be given many opportunties when they're young to utilize their mind to learn, so they may not have "learned" as much, but they still have ability to be smart.
Which is why I think parents who think that making their baby learn spanish and listen to mozart in attempts to make sure their child is a genius, they're kind of wasting their time, though endowing your child in educational toys and what-not when theyre young can help to have more information when they grow older.

To be smart naturally and to be smart with help are two totally different things. People that ask multiple questions, and pass the test aren't technically smart, they are helped. Those who can excel without the help of others, and just, by nature, understand the topics thrusted upon them, are smart, but I don't think they were born that way. When you are little, your parents have a large impact on how intelligent you are. There are parents that weren't given a rock for a brain, and have children that are not very bright. Had those parents helped their child learn and taught them knowledgeable things in life, would have set a better future for them in the school and work world. Then the parents that work with their children and teach them new things and words, normally have an intelligent baby.

So what I'm saying is, you may not be born smart, but if you develop intellectually at a young age, you will be 'smart'.

I think that it all depends upon the learning environment that you are surrounded by from birth. If your parents make sure that they read to you at a young age, you will probably develope a taste for reading later on in life. If your parents don't use a ton of baby talk, your vocabulary will excel compared to that of other children your age simply because you have always been taught to use more advanced words to describe your feelings or to convey thoughts to others. On the other hand, those children who were not read to or interacted with educationally at a young age tend to have slightly shorter attention spans when it comes to learning and school work. It also depends upon the teachers that we have when we are younger, I think. If the teachers would show a greater passion for the subjects which they are teaching, it may spark a higher level of interest in the minds of the pupils that they are teaching. So, yes, in a nutshell, I believe that it depends almost completely upon the environment, unless, of course, the child in question has a genetic predisposition that stimulates a thirst for knowledge.

Once again, I believe that some people are born w/ a greater intellectual capacity than others. Some kids immediately are playing w/ their toys and trying to figure out how it is put together, while some just play w/ it and think this is fun. I believe that it also depends on the environment that the child is thrust into. If a kid's parents immediately start reading to them and interacting w/ them, I believe that when they get older, they will be smarter than other kids their age. I also believe that kids like that feeling of you got the right answer and congratulations, so I think that kids will learn more that way to achieve that acknowledgement from their elders.
I think that some kids are born more intellectual than others, yes, but it is the environment that they are put into which will tell the whole truth.

People are very much born smart, but that doesn't mean that environment can't teach children. Some children are born with an inquisitive mind. These kids question everything. Sure, this gets annoying, but they can think of things to say during class to bring up the deepest minds of the teachers.

When people hear that the smartest kids according to the ACT test listen to Beethoven, parents assume that forcing your kid to listen to this kind of music will somehow magically make your kid smart. The kid has to have the initiative to learn and love the topic. Otherwise, there will be no learning whatsoever.

Cully's comment, "The kid has to have the initiative to learn and love the topic. Otherwise, there will be no learning whatsoever" rings ture. If students love the topic they will learn the material with a little effort, but what of the topics that students do not love. Could some initiative and effort help them learn? Where has the love of learning gone in kids or was that just a passing fancy?

When I read this article it actually made me laugh a little. My Dad was a straight F student in high school and my mom was probably a B or C average student, so what happened to me? I don't think that being smart has anything to do with genetics or inheritance, i just think that being smart has to do with how outgoing, motivated, and well structured a person is. I do believe that parents have an impact on grades, not in a genetic sort of way, but in forceful sort of way such as telling you to do your homework, making you study, or punishing you if you get a bad grade. The pressure parents put on their children can have a major affect on how well the child does in school. I also agree that when a child is young, the parents sort of make a path for them by doing certain activities with them or even teaching them how to read earlier than usual.

People, in my opinion, are born with the potential to be smart. I think parents have a lot to do with it too, but maybe not in the way you may think. Parents that talk to their babies a lot and read to them tend to have smarter kids. Also, if they associate playing with learning at a young age, a kid will be excited to learn. I think that it does all come down to the kid though. If they want to learn, they will.

I think parents to read, sing, and talk to their children when they are still in their mother's stomach are children with more developed minds. I also think that sometimes it is just in their genetics to be smart because some people absorb knowledge easier than others. People also learn differently: some by example and others by repetition. I also believe that everyone has the potential to be smart it just depends on how much they are willing to put in the time and effort. You have to work.

I believe that the way people are raised helps to mold them into "smart" people. If you are raised to be hardworking, independant and motivated, i think you will get transfer this into everything you do, like learning. If you are given everything you want was a child, you become lazy and dependant on other people. Those who want to learn and succeed will.

I believe that intelligance *spelling?* comes from a mixture of genes and environment. We all have the option to learn, but we must have the will and desire to learn in order to be successful in that department. I think that many people just believe one is born with smarts and then they just don't try because they don't think that they can be great.
I think that parents need to push their kids more and make them work hard in school and put in an effort to help them learn. Helping children learn in fun ways when they are younger is a great way to start ones nack for learning as their life progresses, in my opinion at least...

I think that it just depends on the person. Some people have the natural capabilities to remember what they have learned and catch on quickly, which may be a genetic trait, while others have to spend more time studying and ask more questions to do well on tests and homework. I believe that a significant amount of how they learn, and their speed of learning is effected by the learning environment of the person, especially during their early life. Everyone has the capability to be smart; they just have to want it. Some people are very passionate about learning, while others need to have motivation, or influence to get them to learn.

I honestly believe that they are people who are born smart. Some people, school comes totally naturally to and they don't even really have to work for it. Others, however, put forth a ton of effort into their school work and achieve the same grades. Their childhood life,of course, plays a huge role in their smartness and ability to learn. Someone who's parents are always facing them with learning facts or characteristics will of course have the mind set to learn and obtain information. On the other hand, kids who's parents don't work witht them at all or give them any guidlines to follow will have a much harder time sitting in school and obeying the rules, and obtaining the information taught to them.

I think that people can be born smart, but what they do with what they've been given determines on how much they will achieve. On the other hand, people can also take the steps to help learn better so they can become smarter.
I do believe in some cases that genetics can play a role in someone's capability to be able learn. Take for example, both of my parent's are extremely good and like at math; however, I hate math but somehow I get A's or B's in all of my math classes. This would be a type of inherited learning. Not all people, though, fall into this logic because some people, who might come from difficult backgrounds, are somtimes the smartest ones. The reason they are determined to make a better life for themselves.

I believe that everyone, besides kids that are born mentally challenged, is born with the same amount of smartness. I personally believe that what your parents do with you as a kid is what gets you off on the right foot and helps you become the “smart kid.” Being able to learn how to read before you get into kindergarten is an extremely important thing for kids to be able to do. It puts them ahead of most kids in their grade. When I was little my mom and dad always worked with me and had me working in workbooks and I contribute that to why I’m a pretty smart kid. I also believe effort is half the battle too. I know lots of kids who are smart, but they choose to get bad grades because they’re lazy and don’t want to work hard for something. It kind of makes me mad to see kids like that, but its their choice and most of them don’t have parents to push them like I do.

Honestly I think that some kids might be able to be born smart, but also they need to want to learn. If the kids don't want to learn then what is the point of even going to school and wasting what you could learn if you won't listen. Although some kids aren't quite as lucky they have to actually work to be smart in other words they need to pay attention in class and do everything that will help them comprehend what the teacher is saying to them. Even though kids really don't want to listen to what teachers have to say about getting the best possible education they have. For me to be born smart you would really have to know what you are talking about if you think you are so smart. Some kids do need to learn that they really should just ask questions that are going to help them get the concept instead of what they think is going to give them an answer. I know that I see kids go up and ask the teacher if they can have the answer, but that won't help you learn.

ha ha i dont think i was born smart. but who cares im still learnin. but anyways i heard something that as a baby you are a genous cause ur brain is developing really fast but as life starts to catch up you are becoming normal. well my little brothers is smart cause i tough him everything i knew pretty much and now he get into trouble a lot cause school bores him alot he says its too easy and since he is really smart and naughty i refer to him as the EVIL GENIOUS. but he is such a nice kid. but i think he could easily work for NASA cause hes interested in all things for space. but to make a child smart i think u need to get them to open there mind and let them learn on there own time some kids can learn fast and some people call them retarded and i hate that cause i like to learn on my speed thats why i cram a lot of homework cause then i want to learn but some people dont understand that. right now today im glad there was just a bunch of tests cause im tired not because i need sleep cause im not ready to learn. my speeches are to excite any one but this is nice to do some of this stuff.

I think that some people are born smart. However, they also have to learn just like everybody else. We learn new things everyday and it makes us smarter. Some people are able to remember more information and some people are lucky enough to have photographic memory. If you weren't born smart, you can become smart. It may take hours of studying but it's not imposible. There are people that are smart in every subject but one. My cousin has A's in every subject but math. It's either he has some form of dyslexia or he just doesn't want to try. I think that if he tried and got help, he could improve that grade just like everybody else. If everyone tried, they could get "good grades".

I think some people are born smart, but I also think that some of the things that people learn are taught through school. When children learn to walk and talk, they have to learn that, but when they have to divide fractions, then people have to learn that. Sompe people have been born smart because they excel. Others have problems in school and they are put in differnt classes to get some help on their homework. Some people make fun of other people because they are stupid and need help with their homework or that they are useless and can't do the job they are want to do. I think it depends on if the people are born smart or if is learned through school or anyother learning.
